Authors' objectives:
The objective of this study is to develop an specific and explicit system to prioritise patients on waiting list for spinal fusion elective surgery in the public healthcare service of Catalonia.
Authors' recommendations:
A priority-setting system that makes it possible to rank patients on waiting list from highest to lowest priority has been obtained, where clinical criteria have been the most relevant both in relative weight and in number. Functional and social criteria have had an overall weight of 15% and 16% respectively. In addition, due to the possible evolution of the diagnoses during the waiting period, a periodic reassessment of patients on waiting list is recommended. This priority-setting system incorporates aspects and criteria obtained in previous systems developed by the AIAQS and has been designed by taking into account the views of both patients and relatives and clinical experts. The complexity and variety of the pathologies associated with the procedures included in the grouping of this type of elective surgery evidences the need to assess the validity, reliability and utility of this tool by means of specific studies in hospitals with different levels of complexity in Catalonia.
