Bipolar PlasmaKinetic electrovaporization for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is considered the standard surgical therapy for lower urinary tract symptoms secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Its high success rate is reflected by substantial improvements in symptom scores, urinary flow rate, postvoid residual (PVR) urine volume, and a low retreatment on long-term follow-up. However, TURP is associated with significant morbidity. Complications consist of perioperative bleeding requiring blood transfusion, transurethral resection (TUR) syndrome, urinary incontinence, bladder neck stricture, and sexual dysfunction. Newer treatment modalities have been developed as alternatives to TURP, with the goal of providing the patient with similar improvement in symptom relief, while reducing morbidity and improving perioperative outcomes.
