Authors' recommendations: Teledermatology, a branch of telemedicine, uses telecommunication technology to transfer medical information in the field of dermatology. Teledermatology enables medical diagnosis or treatment by a physician located at some distance from the patient with a skin disease. Modern teledermatology uses two different modalities: live interactive teledermatology (LI) and store-and-forward (SAF) teledermatology. LI teledermatology uses videoconferencing equipment to connect patient and dermatologist in real time. SAF teledermatology uses still images sent to a dermatologist, who reviews them and provides recommendations at a later time. Often, LI teledermatology visits integrate the use of static images for tracking of skin lesions, which demonstrates how these technologies can be used in conjunction with one another.
