Authors' recommendations: There is some evidence from RCTs and cohort studies suggesting antibiotic-loaded bone cement reduces the rate of deep infection in patients undergoing primary hip or knee replacement surgery. No conclusions can be reached regarding the optimal dose or type of antibiotic in cement. Information on antibiotic related toxicity was not presented in either systematic review. No conclusions can be drawn regarding the efficacy or safety of antibiotic-loaded bone cement in patients with infected joint prosthesis.
