Authors' recommendations:
Based on two systematic reviews, there is no evidence to support the practice of pre-operative showering or bathing with antiseptic agents (chlorhexidine or povidone iodine) to reduce SSI. One guideline recommends showering or bathing with soap the day before, or the day of, surgery. These findings are applicable to at-home and hospital-administered washes as the studies included in the systematic reviews did not discriminate between the two settings.
