Authors' recommendations: No relevant evidence was identified on the diagnostic accuracy of organic acid testing for autism. Two case studies were identified that reported the use of organic acid tests in children with autistic symptoms. Both studies reported levels of organic acids above the normal range for children with autistic symptoms, and one study found higher organic acid levels compared with those found in children without autistic symptoms. One study reported a reduction in the patient’s autistic-type symptoms and hyperactivity following a restricted diet in protein intake and treatment with sodium benzoate and arginine for one year.According to the current literature, the diagnostic accuracy of organic acid testing for autism cannot be determined. The limited available evidence should be considered when determining whether to the fund the practice of organic acid testing for autism.
