Topical diclofenac for the treatment of musculoskeletal pain unrelated to osteoarthritis: a review of the clinical effectiveness

The studies reviewed for this report suggest that in general, topical diclofenac (in gel and patch formulations), is safe and effective in reducing pain and improving physical function in non-OA musculoskeletal conditions over the short term. Two active control studies found the comparators to be more effective than topical diclofenac, although improvement in patients taking diclofenac was still observed. Another study found that effectiveness may differ between topical gel formulations of diclofenac. This then suggests that differences in Topical Diclofenac for Musculoskeletal Pain effectiveness may exist between gel, solution, and patch-delivered formulations of diclofenac as well. Based on the evidence found in this review, no conclusions can be drawn regarding the effectiveness of topical solution formulations of diclofenac in non-OA musculoskeletal indications.
