Authors' recommendations: It has been suggested that LSG may have advantages over other bariatric surgeries. Evidence from one RCT with an uncertain risk of bias suggested that LSG is associated with greater weight loss than LAGB after three years of follow-up and may have a lower incidence of complications. In two RCTs and one controlled clinical trial, weight loss with LSG appeared to be similar to LRYGB, with possible fewer nutrient deficiencies noted in one study. However, the study in which nutrient deficiencies were assessed had some methodological limitations which could compromise the validity of its findings. Guidelines for bariatric surgery support the use of LSG for weight loss; however, no guidance is offered as to when this technique would be preferable over others. At present, there is limited evidence of uncertain quality upon which to base policy decisions about the use of LSG in the management of obesity. With these limitations in mind, LSG does appear to be equally or more effective as other bariatric surgeries.
