Authors' recommendations: Limited evidence suggests that extending thromboprophylaxis with LMWH post-discharge may be beneficial in some high-risk patients after major abdominal or pelvic surgery for cancer, but further research is needed to determine optimal timeframe and safety. Current guidelines state that extended thromboprophylaxis may be considered in select high-risk patients including those who have had major surgery for cancer in the abdomen or pelvis.
