Authors' objectives:

This technology evaluation was conducted to assess the efficacy and safety of sacral electrical stimulation on patients with idiopathic voiding dysfunctions.

Authors' recommendations: There is evidence of poor quality published suggesting that sacral electrical stimulation (neuromodulation) can be considered for the treatment of bladder emptying dysfunctions such as urinary urge incontinence, increased urinary frequency, urgency-frequency or non-obstructive urinary retention (overflow urinary incontinence) in patients refractory to standard pharmacological treatment and/or pelvic floor treatment and in those after initial testing evaluation a 50% improvement or more was found with percutaneous sacral nerve electrical stimulation.
