Authors' objectives:

To assess the available evidence on the efficacy, safety and issues related with coverage of therapeutic hypothermia in patients with stroke or brain trauma.

Authors' recommendations: Based on the results of the analyzed studies, there is no evidence to support the use of therapeutic hypothermia in patients with stroke since there is no clear benefit in neurological outcome or mortality.Based on the results of the analyzed studies, there is no evidence to support the use of therapeutic hypothermia in patients with brain trauma injuries. Although there is a benefit in neurological outcome in the global meta-analysis of clinical trials, this benefit is not observed when focusing on studies with adequate methodological quality. In contrast, one of the meta-analysis showed and increased incidence of pneumonia in the hypothermia group.
