Authors' objectives:

This document evaluates the usefulness of nucleoplasty in patients with lumbar discopathy.

Authors' recommendations: The evidence found on nucleoplasty is of poor methodological quality. There was only one RCT in patients with cervical discogenic pain. The remaining studies are observational, and therefore valid conclusions that may be drawn are scarce. One study comparing nucleoplasty with microdiscectomy in patients with disc excursion showed that in the mid-term follow up, the results in terms of pain relief were worse than with nucleoplasty.Although this technology might be used in some cases and it has the benefit of being minimally invasive, more comparative studies are required comparing it against conventional surgery and other minimally invasive alternatives to be able to draw definitive conclusions.
