Total Pancreatectomy with Autologous Islet Cell Transplantation (TP/AIT) for chronic pancreatitis
Record ID 32011000854
English
Authors' objectives:
Chronic pancreatitis is a progressive, inflammatory process that causes permanent damage to the pancreas, leading to debilitating chronic abdominal pain. Patients, more than half being women, are generally in midlife but the disease can occur in children and those older than 60 years. The most common etiologies of chronic pancreatitis are familial/idiopathic, pancreatic divisum (congenital), and past alcohol abuse. Although there are interim medical and surgical treatment options, total pancreatectomy (TP) may ultimately be necessary to provide pain relief. Pancreatic removal inevitably leads to brittle diabetes; however autologous islet cell transplantation (AIT) may preserve endocrine function.
