Authors' objectives:
Menopause, the cessation of menstruation, occurs at around age 50 years for most women. During this process, levels of the hormone estrogen fall dramatically and women may experience hot flashes, sleep disorders, mood swings, vaginal dryness, and decreased sexual desire. In addition, osteoporosis can occur if estrogen levels remain low for prolonged periods. These symptoms can be reduced or prevented by use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which typically involves administration of estrogen and progesterone via pills, skin patches, or gels.
