Authors' objectives:
Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) usually develops 12 to 48 hours after an event such as trauma, bloodstream infection, massive blood transfusion, development of pneumonia, acute pancreatitis, or inhalation of body fluids or foreign fluids. These inciting events can trigger inflammation within the lungs and leakage of fluid into the lungs that can rapidly progress to ARDS, a life-threatening disorder in which patients have severe difficulty breathing and poor absorption of the oxygen that they do inhale. Each year in the United States, approximately 191,000 patients develop ARDS and approximately 75,000 patients die from this disorder.
