Authors' objectives:

In the United States, ovarian cancer causes approximately 3% of all cancers that occur in women, and it is the fifth most common cause of cancer death in women. The American Cancer Society estimates that, in 2010, there will be approximately 21,880 new cases of ovarian cancer in the United States, and approximately 13,850 women will die of the disease. The 5-year survival rate for ovarian cancer is 93% if treated before it has spread beyond the ovaries; however, more than 80% of these cancers are detected after this stage. After metastasis, the 5-year survival rate falls below 20%.
