ChloraPrep (CareFusion Corp.) for skin antisepsis

Record ID 32011000794

Authors' objectives:

Intravascular catheters and surgical procedures that disrupt the skin can allow bacteria to enter the body, causing potentially severe infections. Each year in the United States, approximately 250,000 catheter-related bloodstream infections occur, often as an unintended consequence of central venous catheterization. Postsurgical and catheter-related infections can be deadly. Contamination of blood cultures with bacteria can also occur, delaying accurate diagnosis until uncontaminated cultures are obtained. To prevent intravascular catheter-related infections, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend the use of 2% chlorhexidine.
