Authors' objectives:
Asthma is a chronic lung disorder that is characterized by inflammation and reversible obstruction of the airway combined with episodic wheezing, coughing, or difficulty breathing. In some patients, chronic inflammation of the airway leads to permanent tissue damage and impairment of lung function. Approximately 32 million people in the United States have been diagnosed as having asthma and it is responsible for approximately 4000 deaths per year. In 2006, asthma accounted for approximately 10.6 million visits to physician offices and 1.7 million emergency department visits in the United States. During acute asthma attacks, the bronchi can narrow substantially, primarily due to the contraction of smooth airway muscle. Reversal of this process is normally achieved with drugs that promote relaxation of airway muscle.
