Acticoat (Smith&Nephew Inc.) for Burn Wounds

Record ID 32011000785

Authors' objectives:

The clinical management of patients with burns is a challenge due to both the pain that the injuries inflict, and the high risk of wound infection, which is a significant source of morbidity and mortality.
As a result, a wide array of topical antimicrobials and dressings have been developed to prevent infection of burns and associated wounds. Silver has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, and is a broad-spectrum antibiotic. Since the 1960s, silver-based creams and ointments have been a mainstay of burn care. However, they require frequent and painful dressing changes, which expose the wound to potential contaminants, and require skilled nursing time.
