Authors' recommendations: Australia has one of the lowest rates of organ donation in the world. Kidney transplantation reduces the financial burden on the health system and results in a better quality of life for the patient with end-stage renal disease compared to dialysis. Donation of organs from non-heart beating donors appears to be more acceptable to the next of kin, which may lead to an increase in the number of organ donations. There appears to be little difference in graft and patient survival for patients transplanted with organs from NHBD.This technology is already being implemented to some degree in Australia, therefore HealthPACT does not intend to further review this technology.
