Authors' objectives:

To systematically analyze the scientific evidence that supports the concept of a greater morbidity and mortality with physical causes in patients with schizophrenia versus those of the general population, combining a review of literature with an analysis of hospital records.

Authors' recommendations: Establish appropriate monitoring systems for diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of those diseases with a greater impact. Carry out interventions in order to reduce modifiable risk factors, such as the elimination of the intake of alcohol and of other hepatotoxic agents. Coordinate the intervention by mental healthcare services and primary healthcare services that care for each patient. An excess in mortality is ascertained, compared to the general population, associated to diabetes and metabolic syndrome, respiratory disease, hepatitis B and C, and HIV. However, the excess in mortality is associated to respiratory disease, cardiovascular disease and cancer, although the last does not exhibit a greater prevalence in the morbidity analysis. For their part, it is considered that the patients’ attitude is modifiable, because, although they are not worried about the risks, they are familiar with them and can respond acceptably to educational programs.
