Authors' recommendations: This bulletin presents the results of two meta-analyses conducted to compare the efficacy of the following clinical strategies for smoking cessation: the combination of health care professional counseling and medication vs. medication alone or counseling alone. The efficacy for various first-line medications for tobacco dependence treatment, and the expenses of this treatment are also presented. Efficacy was assessed by comparing the abstinence rates of control and intervention arms. The results demonstrated that the estimated abstinence rate of the combination of health care professional counseling and medication was higher than that for medication alone or counseling alone.
