Authors' objectives:

To assess, in the currently available continuous registries of cardiac surgical procedures, features regarding authorship, outcome variables, quality control, their consequences for the quality of care, and bibliometric impact.

Authors' recommendations: Usually, cardiac surgery registries are tools in quality improvement programs, often promoted by national or regional scientifi c societies or governmental agencies. It is quite likely that, as a part of quality of care enhancement programs, they are playing a role in quality improvement. This revision has detected room for improvement in some of their methodological issues and their execution. These registries have shown to be able to generate new knowledge when their fi ndings are incorporated to wider hypotheses and research programs.
