Authors' recommendations: Various means restriction/intentional overdose prevention policies/strategies developed in several western developed countries were identified. Means restriction and intentional overdose prevention policies and strategies are usually embedded in broad suicide prevention policy/strategy documents, and are not in stand-alone documents. In general, these policies/strategies do not specifically target children, youths, and young adults. Evaluation of the effects of various means restrictions including intentional overdose prevention in reducing suicidal behaviours is a complex task; hence a systematic approach that takes into account all of the important components of a comprehensive framework for a provincial policy/strategy initiative is essential.
