Authors' recommendations: The included studies indicate that BSGI is a useful adjunct in the pre-surgical evaluation of women with biopsy-proven breast cancer. A number of studies indicated changes in clinical management of some women. However, BSGI should be used with caution and in conjunction with other imaging modalities as the number of false negatives and false positives may have serious consequences. As the dual-head camera offers superior imaging for breast lesions of all sizes, the single-head camera should not be considered for the evaluation of women with breast cancer.Based on the evidence available BSGI appears to be useful in the pre-surgical evaluation of women with biopsy-proven breast cancer when used as an adjunct with other imaging modalities including mammography, ultrasound and MRI. Therefore HealthPACT have recommended that a Horizon Scanning Report be commissioned.
